Gardening tip of the month
Plant dahlia tubers
Our spring-flowering bulbs are starting to make an appearance, so why not be inspired by them to start planting one of your summer-flowering bulbs now?

Choosing which dahlia to grow
Dahlias have an extremely diverse range of varieties. Their bold flowers last for a long period in the summer and autumn, and there are thousands of cultivars.
Consider what height you would like them to grow, whether you prefer single flowers, cactus varieties, or even striking pompoms or ball-shaped blooms. Keep colour in mind too, considering if it fits with your garden design.

Choose where to grow them
Native to Mexico and parts of South America, so warmer conditions are best. Therefore, a sunny, sheltered spot will provide the best growing conditions. Smaller bedding varieties can grow in containers.
Aim for rich, fertile soil which is free-draining. Lighter soils will be best for dahlia tubers to be left outdoors during winter. Perhaps start conditioning the soil now, so you can plant later.

How to plant dahlia tubers
Later in the year, dahlia tubers can be planted out straight into the garden. However, it’s not quite warm enough yet, so you can start them in pots under cover now.
Half-fill a 2 to 3 litre pot with peat-free compost. Position the tuber in the container, keeping the central stem upwards, and cover with more compost. Label the pot, and lightly water.

Caring for dahlia tubers
After planting your tuber into a pot, keep it somewhere warm and free of frost. Once they start to shoot, you can resume watering, which should be about 2 to 3 weeks for many varieties.
Pinch out shoots as it grows, so only about 5 remain. This will guarantee bushy growth, and plenty of blooms. Plant out into the garden in May once the soil is warmer.
